Abstract

The article addresses the main advantages and challenges in development of the Arctic Zone of the Russian Federation (AZRF). The most important resource, transport and infrastructure projects in the AZRF are described, as well as the readiness of the region to implement them. The current state and the potential for coal mining development in the ASRF are reviewed. Production and supply of the whole of Arctic coal as well as its support zones are analyzed. The potential for the development of Arctic coals, including the green-field projects, is identified. The probability of implementing the investment projects envisaged in the ‘Russian Coal Industry Development Program for the Period until 2035’ was assessed.
