Abstract

The article assesses the civilizational significance of coal usage. The global civilizational trends of coal, oil and gas consumption are described for conditions of different decarbonization rates in the world economy. A correlation between the civilizational period of coal use and the global demographic transition is shown. Estimates of the future global and regional coal consumption and imports are provided. New opportunities to realize the potential of Russian coal exporters are established.
