Abstract

The paper studies the effects of changes in the global economic and political trends caused by the ideological and economic confrontation between the Russian Federation and the countries adhering to the pro-Western political course regarding the ukrainian crisis on the coal mining industry of Russia. In order to achieve the stated goal, the authors analyse sets of restrictive measures (sanctions packages) imposed on Russia from February 2022 to February 2024, which had the most significant impact on the coal mining industry of the Russian Federation. The authors examine changes in the dynamics of volatility of the world’s leading coal futures from the beginning of the unstable period in the global political arena until February 2024. The next research phase is an analysis of changes in net profit and market value of the leading Russian coal companies in 2022 compared to the baseline time period (2021) and changes in the dynamics of the balance of income and expenses reported by the companies in 2023. The research paper presents a forecast of the possible prospects for these companies in the near future based on studying the reasons for changes in the exchange rate of the world’s leading futures for the discussed category of economic resources and their impact on the profit and market value of securities of the leading companies in the coal industry in the territory of the Russian Federation.
