Abstract
Prevention of spontaneous combustion of coal helps to increase the operational safety at coal enterprises and reduce the economic damage caused by spontaneous fires. The article investigates the effects of coal wetting on its sorption activity, the incubation period of spontaneous combustion, the permeability coefficient of coal accumulation, as well as the release of methane, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Wetting was found to reduce the sorption activity of coal with respect to oxygen for 15 days, then the wetted coal becomes more active than the non-treated samples. Periodic wetting of coal accumulations is required to maintain the preventative effect. Coal wetting sharply reduces carbon monoxide formation as compared to non-treated samples and does not affect carbon dioxide emission. Methane release from wetted coal is also lower than from the non-treated samples. However, as the moisture evaporates from the coal, the carbon monoxide and methane release becomes greater than those from the non-treated samples.
