Abstract
The article considers the role of the coal industry in the spatial development of the Arctic territories of Russia under the conditions of the global energy transition. The aim of the work is to substantiate measures for the sustainable use of coal and coal-fired power generation in the Arctic, taking into account the objectives of the development of coastal territories and the Northern Sea Route. The research methodology includes analyses of existing data and regulatory frameworks related to the coal industry, energy policy and climate change. The results of the analysis show the significance of coal as an important element of energy security and socio-economic development of the Arctic, as well as the need to minimise the negative environmental impact of the coal industry. Special attention is paid to the prospects for the introduction of clean coal technologies, such as carbon dioxide capture and disposal, and the development of CO2 sequestration projects at carbon landfills. The link between the development of the coal industry and the development of the Northern Sea Route transport infrastructure is emphasised.
Keywords
