Abstract
The article is devoted to analysing the dynamics of coal production and imports in China in the period from 2019 to 2024 in order to identify the prospects for expanding Russian coal exports to the PRC. The article considers the role of coal in the global energy sector despite decarbonisation trends and environmental problems associated with its use. The study relies on statistical data from China and Russia, as well as analytical reports and media publications. The analysis shows stable but slowing growth in coal production in China, especially in Inner Mongolia, which is consolidating its position as a key coal region. Meanwhile, China’s coal imports remain significant, although they have shown fluctuations in recent years. The impact of regional trends, mine safety policies and the market value of coal companies is emphasised. Factors affecting import flows are reviewed and favourable prospects for Russian producers are highlighted, especially when compared to Australia and Indonesia.
