Abstract
The presented work is devoted to the development of a new generation ferrous metallurgy concept based on the use of lignite. In the context of global economic challenges and environmental constraints, traditional coke-oven pig iron production technologies are becoming less and less sustainable. The aim of the study is to substantiate the possibility and feasibility of replacing coking coal with lignite by means of its partial gasification and subsequent use of gasification products for iron reduction. The paper analyses the physical and chemical properties of brown coal of the deposit, studies the processes of its partial gasification and direct reduction of iron using the obtained thermocoke and gas fuel. Experimental results have shown the possibility of achieving a high degree of iron metallisation and a potential reduction in the cost of pig iron by 30-40% compared to conventional technologies.
