Abstract

The article deals with the urgent problem of safety in the coal industry associated with the occurrence of coal dust explosions. The aim of the study is to develop a methodology for determining the concentration and dispersion parameters of coal dust for early detection of explosive situations. To achieve this goal, the existing methods of dust concentration measurement including gravimetric, electrical, radiometric and optical methods were analysed. Based on the analysis of advantages and disadvantages, the optical methods, namely turbidimetric and nephelometric, were chosen. In order to simulate the operation of these methods, a mathematical model has been developed, taking into account coal dust parameters, laser radiation wavelength and mine conditions. The results obtained show high sensitivity of the turbidimetric method at low dust concentrations, which makes it promising for early hazard detection. The nephelometric method is effective at high dust concentrations.
