Abstract
In the presented work the problem of water resources pollution as a result of activity of coal enterprises is investigated and an electrochemical method for wastewater treatment is proposed. It is shown that electrochemical treatment has a significant effect on the physicochemical and microbiological characteristics of wastewater. The influence of current density and flow rate on pH of anolyte was determined, which allows to regulate the acidity of the medium for precipitation of heavy metals. It was found that electrochemical treatment provides a high degree of wastewater disinfection, reducing the microbial number to zero. The elemental composition of the catholyte sludge was analysed, which showed a high content of calcium and magnesium. A pattern was experimentally established when sodium carbonate was titrated with strong acid, demonstrating the buffering properties of wastewater. Additional studies have established the optimum current density for coal mine wastewater treatment.
