Abstract

The article discusses the prospects of mining of gas-bearing coal seams by the method of underground coal gasification (UCG) as an effective approach to the integrated development of coal deposits. The authors emphasise that energy security and availability of resources dictate the need to search for new and environmentally acceptable methods of energy extraction. Traditional methods of development are associated with risks and negative environmental impact. UCG, which offers the conversion of coal into gas directly in the subsurface, could be an alternative. The proposed technology involves controlled movement of the blast point for uniform gasification of the seams, which ensures more complete energy recovery. In the zone of mining influence, the gas permeability of the coal seam increases significantly, which is a key factor for effective degassing. Studies have shown that the fracture zone at UCG is smaller than at shaft mining, which allows effective degasification of seams and safe mining. An important aspect is the utilization of thermal energy released during gasification, which makes it possible to use heated groundwater for thermal effect on formations and increase methane production. The results of the work confirm the prospectivity of the UCG method for integrated development of coal deposits.
