Abstract

The presented article is devoted to the study of the prospects of strategic use of underground coal gasification (UCG) as an environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative to traditional methods of coal mining and processing. The paper provides a comprehensive analysis of technological and economic aspects of UCG on the basis of generalisation of data from previous developments and modelling of the gasification process taking into account various mining and geological conditions. Special attention is paid to the influence of blast composition on energy performance and economic efficiency of the technology. Comparison of UCG with surface gasification by the Lurgi method demonstrates the competitiveness of the underground method, especially in terms of reducing the cost of coal mining and transport. The results of the study show that the optimum capacity of UCG plant is 300-500 MW, and also allows efficient utilization of low-quality coals.
