Abstract

This article reviews modern methods for automated monitoring of the spatial position of mining machines in coal mines. It highlights challenges in measuring tilt angles relative to longitudinal and transverse axes and nearby systems during automation of development and face operations. Methods are classified by the physical principles of measuring devices into optical and non-optical groups. Common methods and equipment are described; LiDAR limitations and positive machine vision experience are noted. Non-optical tilt-measurement solutions and their applicability in coal mines are outlined. The paper concludes that MEMS-based methods and machine vision are the most promising for tracking mining machine position underground.
